Important facts to know about Traffic Tickets

Punishment Ranges

Most traffic violations are Class C misdemeanors and generally are punishable by a fine only within the range of $1.00 - $200.00, plus court costs. The actual fine amount and court costs to be paid may vary from court to court, and county to county and some violations can result in higher fines. Some people think that it’s just easier, or, perhaps, less costly just to pay a ticket rather than hiring an attorney. Beware: This can result in unintended and hidden consequences such as points, surcharges and license suspension. Find out more

Failure to Appear

If you are issued a traffic ticket, the citation will contain a date by which the court must be contacted. This is known as an appearance date. In some courts you may appear by phone, and in other courts, you must appear in person or by an attorney. If no appearance is made, a new violation of failure to appear will be filed against you. Points and Surcharges

Points are assessed for traffic convictions. Once the conviction has been added to an individual’s driver record, points are assigned and remain on the driver record for three years from the date of conviction. Accumulation of points will lead to surcharges. Find out more

Commercial Driver License (CDL)

Here’s the first piece of advice and it’s free - Don’t hold a CDL unless you must have this type of license for employment. Individuals who hold a CDL do not have the same options available to those who hold an ordinary Class C operator’s license. Texas does not allow the holder of a CDL license the option of probation or the taking of a Driver Safety Course (DSC) to avoid a conviction. Find out more
